Institutional Review Board (IRB) Compliance
The Use of Human Subjects in Research Guidelines
Development of these guidelines has been guided by the U. S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP).
The use of human subjects in research at Warren National University (WNU) is regulated to ensure that all research carried out under the name of WNU conforms to ethical standards:
It is University policy that all research and research-related activities using humans as subjects shall follow Public Health Service regulations (45-CFR-46) and be reviewed by the WNU Institutional Review Board (IRB).
Prior to conducting research involving human subjects KW/WNU students must complete the Online Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects.
WNU faculty members, staff, and students wishing to conduct research using human subjects must receive the approval of the WNU IRB prior to beginning the work.
Purpose of the IRB Review Process
The IRB is the administrative body established according to federal regulations (45-CFR-46), to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in research activities carried out under the name of WNU. The IRB has the authority to approve, require modifications, or disapprove any and all research activities as specified by the federal regulations or University policy.
Conducting Research
Human subjects research is operationally defined as a systematic investigation (i.e., the gathering and analysis of information) designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge [Federal Policy § 45CFR 46.102(d)]. Generalizable knowledge is defined by the KW/WNU IRB by whether results are published, bibliographically available (e.g., dissertations and theses), presented outside the University setting (e.g., at a conference), or developed for others to build upon (e.g., pilot data collected for an investigator from another institution).
WNU IRB Human Subjects Research Documents
For all research involving human subjects, the student will submit an application for approval to the WNU IRB, following the guidelines listed in the documents available below. Students should apply for the type of review (i.e. exempt or non-exempt) that they believe to be appropriate for their research study.
